Masse
Masse is a stoneware studio concept built as a brand design project at Pratt Institute. Each piece reflects the origins of its materials through organic texture and shape. The brand is deeply inspired by natural and urban surroundings and the beauty of growth and decay, wholeness and brokenness, rigidity and pliability.
Unable to gather a complete collection of branded stoneware pieces, I found similarities between items in my own home—an exploration that deepened my vision for the brand by highlighting a focus on texture and organic roots. I photographed each piece at high ISO, deliberately introducing noise and grain to create a randomized but cohesive texture across the imagery. Plant, stone, and floral images shot in the same way created an impression of relatedness amongst individual pieces, each with its own source and story. Through exploration with both AI and traditional methods, I developed the name "masse" to evoke images of clay masses, gathering, and organic forms, reinforced by the curling and repetitive shapes of the letterforms.
